Grants up for Grabs

Money being handed off from one person to the other

While the late Senator Everett Dirkson did not exactly say, “A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon you’re talking real money,” there is a lot of money available from federal and non-profit grants.

How Much?

The Biden administration is proposing $3 Trillion to help boost the economy, invest in our nation’s infrastructure and education, develop our work force and fight climate change. The infrastructure plan might be financed through tax increases on the rich and corporations. This all depends on Congress.

However, there’s already a lot of grant funding already out there. A lot of money has come through the American Rescue Plan. These grants will be coming out through 2024.

Follow the Money

Any one person, group or company from any industry can apply.

A good place to start looking for funding grants is GRANTS.GOV. Once there, you will discover that currently there are 26 federal agencies that have grant money to provide. Click the SEARCH GRANTS tab on the home page. Select Forecasted and Posted checkboxes on the left resulting in the current number of opportunities, this case, 2,261.

If you click on an Opportunity Number, you’ll be taken to that opportunity’s web page.

There you can find a synopsis of information for, say, the ceiling on amounts given out, how many awards there will be, and the estimated total program funding available. From here you can also start the application process.

The authoritative source for federal grant programs is the Catalog of Federal Assistance (CFDA). The catalog lists all the available funding programs to all levels of government, non-profit organizations, for profit businesses, and other eligible entities.

Candid maintains a comprehensive database on U.S. and global grant-makers and their funding opportunities. It also operates research, education, and training programs designed to advance knowledge of philanthropy at every level.

State and regional directories can also be found with some research. Try using the Community Foundation Locator to find a grant-making foundation in your region.
